The Jam

A sticky situation – that tastes so sweet

The Gallery is always open on a Sunday afternoon, however to warm up your winter and take you into spring, there is now even more reason to come to the Gallery - The Jam, for joy and entertainment.

The Jam is about performing and having fun. It’s about strumming, hooting, tooting, singing, dancing, stand-up comedy, spoken word – in fact anything that is a little or a lot impromptu.

Everyone is welcome to attend this relaxing afternoon of entertainment, but obviously only those brave enough need take to the stage – who knows, you might even get picked up by a talent scout!

Stay posted for the next Jam - Coming Soon

Spring Squeeze

Documentary Film Screening Series

The Spring Squeeze is the name given to the Gallery’s film screening series. For this series of documentaries, the Gallery experimented with the time slot, moving it from Sunday afternoons to a Thursday evening in an attempt to attract a larger audience. In certain ways this worked, with audience numbers increasing. It was unfortunate that during the last series on one occasion the screening was cancelled due to no one attending.

Contributing to the greater participation level could also be to the format of the screenings – with the screenings only focusing only on two documentary series, and not individual films. Great Artists One with Tim Marlow, a fourteen episode series proved highly engaging, as Marlow took the audience on an in depth study of a handful of the worlds best known artists, including Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, Michangello, Vermeer and Van Gogh. The other series, Five Films about Christo and Jeanne Claude, looked at five of Christo’s large scale environmental sculptures including the Valley Curtain, Running Fence, The Islands and the Umbrellas. Both series were distinctively different in style and content, however both were incredibly fascinating in their own right.

The Gallery wishes to continue screenings, possibly on a more consistent timeframe. As this could move out of starting in spring, please keep an ear out for a new exciting title. The Gallery would also like to see more students attend the evenings, therefore if you know of any young people who may be interested, please let them know.

Any ideas on art documentaries are most welcome.

Bits n' Boats

Found Objects Sculptural Workshop with Ed King

Local sculptor Ed Kind, whose artwork was exhibited in the Little Gallery throughout October and November, led a workshop in conjunction with the Julie Burgess Maritime project. Using discarded timber materials from the Julie Burgess, participants from the workshop were able to create their own maritime inspired sculpture – similar to those of Ed King.

Ed kindly spent time prior to the workshop cutting and drilling dowels that the participants could use for masts, to assist the workshop move smoothly. The masts that Ed prefabricated were of a sloop rig, similar to that found on a ketch. By the end of the workshop everyone who participated was able to construct their own vessel, doing all the drilling, screwing and rigging. Several participants choose to paint their vessels, while others opted to use oils or simply leave the sculptures raw.

Participants were able to decorate their piece using found objects they had bought from home. These objects including left over plumbing fittings as well as galvanised garden products and ceramics.
