NORTH WEST ART CIRCLE ANNUAL EXHIBITION: COMMUNITY ART PROGRAM
Opening Friday 13 May, 6 pm
Devonport Regional Gallery presents the 26th annual North West Art Circle (NWAC) exhibition in the Main Gallery. The NWAC is a group of close to 60 artists based on the North West of Tasmania that provides opportunities for local artists to promote and further develop their artistic practice.
The NWAC exhibition has developed over the years becoming a well attended and popular community event, allowing exposure and recognition of local artists and their work. Well known and emerging artists exhibit works in oil, watercolour, pastel, acrylic, drawing and sculptural forms. This year’s judges are local North West artists Lisa Garland and Brett Steer. The winning works will be presented at the exhibition opening on Friday 13 May.

KIM O’BRIEN: WRAP AND BLEACH
Opening Friday 13 May, 6 pm
Kim O’Brien’s exhibition Wrap and Bleach explores the ancient Japanese form of fabric dying called ‘Arashi Shibori’.
Kim’s Arashi Shibori technique begins with coloured cotton or natural fabrics; the material is then wrapped onto a cylinder and tied with string into varying patterns. A weak bleach solution is poured over the material to leach the dye from the material, then neutralized and washed in a liquid soap.
Traditionally these fabrics would be created into clothing, however Kim hangs these works in their entirety for the viewer to see their full patterns.
