DEVONPORT REGIONAL GALLERY

2007 EXHIBITION PROGRAM
CURRENT - FUTURE

Friday 2 February - Sunday 11 March
Title: meenamatta lena narla puellakanny - Meenamatta Water Country Discussion
Artists: pura-lia meenamatta (Jim Everett) and Jonathan Kimberley

Aboriginal poet pura-lia meenamatta and artist Jonathan Kimberley recently began working collaboratively on art projects. The exhibition meenamatta is their most recent collaboration which combines words and images in painted form. The artists response to the north east landscape of Tasmania has been brought together in a series of paintings with images and text. Through this process, the artists navigate a series of journeys that trace past into future. Their journey is an opportunity to make redundant the distinctions between black and white and to realise a new journey of reconciliation and unity.

Friday 16 March - Sunday 15 April
Title: Intimate and Distant Landscapes
Artists: Jon Cattapan, VIC, Sue Lovegrove, TAS, Jonathan Kimberley, WA, Dorothy Napangardi, NT, and Judy Watson, QLD
Curator: Anne Morrison

Intimate and Distant Landscapes draws from the work of five Australian artists who use the process of painting as a means of rendering an experience of a particular place they are close. Each artist combines intimate and distant perspectives of landscape in their paintings evoking the kind of sensitivities that can only be conveyed through a deeply personal and poetic engagement with a familiar environment. It's a deep-rooted impulse - of knowing, placing, and unearthing unique and often subtle relationships within the landscape which unfolds to the viewer through careful examination of the details.

Friday 20 April - Sunday 6 May

Curator: Catherine Wolfhagen

New Deities focuses on the work of eight Australian artists whose work addresses the cult of celebrity. The exhibition will explore the transformation of the ephemeral pop culture image to icon. Celebrities have come to represent the new deities of a modern society where celebrity worship is the new religion. The exhibition will examine the ways in which contemporary artists explore our obsession with fame, using the images found in the mass media and the internet to highlight issues surrounding this cult phenomenon.
